Description

Think City Sdn Bhd is an urban regeneration and place-making agency founded in 2009 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund. Its founding mandate followed George Town, Penang's 2008 inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it launched the George Town Grants Programme (GTGP) to channel funding into heritage conservation and community-led urban projects.
According to a detailed retrospective published by The Edge Malaysia, the GTGP distributed RM16.3 million in its first five years, split roughly 49% to building conservation, 25% to shared public spaces, 16% to cultural mapping and 11% to capacity building, restoring 87 heritage buildings and generating an estimated 600 jobs in George Town. The same source reports that Think City's RM20.9 million in committed investment sparked RM46.4 million in co-investment, and that a 2014 impact assessment found every RM1 of grant funding drew RM2.25 of additional spending. Think City's own site now reports involvement in over 270 projects nationally as the agency has expanded to Butterworth, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru; the George Town heritage programme's design was also developed in partnership with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
The quantitative figures above trace primarily to one detailed independent business-press retrospective rather than multiple separately audited datasets, so they should be read as a credible but not independently re-verified account of programme-level performance; Think City's own published reports were used only to confirm the agency's current national footprint, not its headline impact numbers.
