Tsukuba Science City is a planned national research hub in Ibaraki Prefecture, roughly 60 km northeast of Tokyo. Japan's Cabinet approved the site for a 'Research and Academic City' in September 1963; construction began in 1967; the Tsukuba Science City Construction Act followed in 1970; the University of Tsukuba was established in 1973; relocation of national research institutes was largely complete by 1980; and the surrounding municipalities were merged into Tsukuba City in 1987.
