UNESCO's human-centred AI competency frameworks for students and teachers, alongside its GenAI guidance and Ethics Recommendation — the global reference for what responsible AI literacy should look like.
UNESCO published AI competency frameworks for students and teachers in 2024, alongside its 2023 Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research and its Recommendation on the Ethics of AI. Together these define a human-centred, ethics-first set of competencies — covering data privacy, human agency, inclusion and the responsible, creative use of AI — that ministries and institutions worldwide are using to shape curricula and teacher development. It is not a deployment but the governing reference framework for the field.
To establish a shared, ethics-first standard for what AI literacy and responsible AI use should look like for both students and teachers, so ministries and institutions have a common reference point when designing curricula and teacher-development programmes.
