UNESCO–KIX Africa 21 Launches Côte d'Ivoire's National AI Competency Framework for Teachers and Students

Côte d'Ivoire's Ministry of National Education and Literacy (MENA), with UNESCO, the International Organisation of La Francophonie's IFEF and the GPE KIX Africa 21 Hub (managed by Canada's International Development Research Centre), held the first workshop of a pilot project on digital and AI competency frameworks in education, 15-17 September 2025 in Yamoussoukro, with delegations from Benin and Senegal. Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Burundi and Senegal are the four pilot countries in this francophone-Africa initiative.

Establish an institutional framework for integrating AI into pedagogical practices while respecting national and international standards, covering technological mastery, innovative pedagogy, digital citizenship and ethical understanding — anchored in Côte d'Ivoire's National Education Digitalisation Strategy (SNDECI, 2024-2028) and recommendations from the National Education States General Assembly (EGENA).

The first workshop convened national officials and regional delegations to work toward AI-competency guidelines for teachers and students. A parallel pillar of the wider four-country programme translates digital learning resources into national and local languages to support literacy and inclusion. The next workshop is scheduled for Benin.

No classroom deployment or learning-outcome data has yet been published; the initiative's documented value so far is national-policy grounding and early capacity-building.

The initiative remains at the framework-development and official-engagement stage across a four-country programme, framed by officials as an opening step in a broader regional movement.
