Samoa's government, backed by a US$57.7M Green Climate Fund grant (US$65.7M total), is upgrading riverworks and drainage across the Vaisigano catchment through the capital Apia, aiming to protect about 37,000 people from recurrent flooding by 2025.
Apia, Samoa's capital and only city, sits at the mouth of the Vaisigano River, a short, steep catchment that floods rapidly during cyclones and heavy rain, most destructively in December 2012 when Cyclone Evan killed several people and damaged much of the city centre.
In response, the Government of Samoa's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment secured Green Climate Fund approval in December 2016 for the "Integrated Flood Management to Enhance Climate Resilience of the Vaisigano River Catchment" programme: a US$65.7 million package (US$57.7 million GCF grant plus US$8 million co-financing) combining catchment-scale riverworks, upgraded downstream drainage capacity, integrated land-use and flood-risk planning, community capacity-strengthening, and ecosystem-based measures within the river corridor.
