Context

Ahead of the 26 May 2019 European elections, Luxembourg's Ministry of Equality between Women and Men ran the two-week #vote5050 'Vote Parity' awareness campaign urging voters to support gender-balanced representation among Luxembourg's MEPs, using social and traditional media, radio spots in Luxembourgish, French and Portuguese, a round table and city-centre activities, with the European Parliament Office, the National Council of Women of Luxembourg and CID Fraen an Gender as partners. A new law encourages parties to present three candidates of each sex.

Results

On election night, three women and three men were elected to represent Luxembourg in the European Parliament. Across the EU, women's share of MEPs rose from 15.2% in 1979 to 36.4% in 2019; the campaign's contribution to the Luxembourg outcome was not formally evaluated.
