Since 2018, Cabo Verde's NOSi and Ministry of Education built 44 tech labs in 43 schools, training close to 14,000 students in coding and robotics. But the programme was suspended in Dec. 2022 — equipment locked, monitors dismissed — still idle in late 2023: a cautionary tale.

Context

Since 2018, Cabo Verde's ICT agency NOSi and the Ministry of Education built Weblab, a network of 44 equipped tech labs across 43 secondary schools, staffed by 43 trained monitors.

Activities

Labs taught robotics, ethical hacking, networking, web/mobile programming, multimedia and device repair to students, teachers and the wider community.

Results

By October 2024, close to 14,000 students had been trained in web development, robotics and digital marketing - but the programme had in fact been suspended since December 2022, with equipment locked away and monitors dismissed.

Conclusions

A well-resourced, wide-reaching rollout can still lose continuity without a clear maintenance and governance plan; no relaunch date or evaluation has been published.
