Context

Women into Construction (WiC) is a UK not-for-profit that partners directly with construction employers and infrastructure projects to place women into work experience, training and jobs on live sites — an employer-facing model rather than a classroom-only training scheme.

Activities

From April 2015, WiC partnered with the Thames Tideway Tunnel ('super sewer') project, London's largest live infrastructure scheme, following recommendations from the project's diversity monitoring body ProBE. In 2022, WiC ran a six-week programme with contractor Willmott Dixon on its Gascoigne Estate regeneration site in East London. WiC has continued signing similar employer partnerships since, including with the Brent Cross Town regeneration scheme.

Results

Independent research published by the University of Westminster documents that the Thames Tideway Tunnel partnership delivered 41 work placements and 30 direct jobs for women by 2019, and contributed to Tideway being named a Times Top 50 Employer for Women in 2018. In the 2022 Willmott Dixon programme, 22 women went through the programme, 165 interviews were arranged with supply-chain partners, and 4 participants secured paid employment directly from the placements, documented in Willmott Dixon's own case study.
