Over 100 women-managed argan cooperatives in Morocco's Sous-Massa region have given rural Amazigh women income and financial autonomy since 1996; a peer-reviewed 829-household study found members 127–582% more likely to earn, though intermediary capture limits net gains.
Women-managed argan oil cooperatives emerged in Morocco's Souss-Massa region in the mid-1990s, initially supported by IFAD and Moroccan government agencies, formalising rural Amazigh women's traditional role in argan nut processing within the 2.5 million-hectare UNESCO Argan Biosphere Reserve (designated 1998).
Formalise women's employment and income in argan processing, provide literacy programmes, financial-service access and recognised professional status within the global argan cosmetics supply chain.
Over 100 cooperatives established by 2025, offering formal employment, literacy programmes funded from cooperative revenues, and access to financial services.
A peer-reviewed mixed-methods study of 829 randomly selected surveys across 54 communities found cooperative membership associated with a 127-582% higher probability of women earning income, alongside improvements in food security, medicine access, education access and savings rates.
The same peer-reviewed evaluation flagged small effect sizes and limited methodological confidence; control of the argan trade has increasingly shifted to large intermediaries supplying cosmetics multinationals, capturing much of the margin and limiting women's net income gains.
