Peru's Yape, used by over 15 million people, added VoiceOver/TalkBack support to sign-up, transfers, top-ups and QR payments. El Comercio reports over 100,000 blind or low-vision users now use it unaided, though no independent audit or co-design process is documented.
Peru's national statistics institute (INEI) counts over 600,000 people with a visual disability. Yape, Peru's leading digital wallet with more than 15 million active users, historically required sighted assistance to complete transfers, top-ups and QR-code payments, since its interface was not built for screen-reader navigation.
In November 2025, Yape announced it had made its core functions — account sign-up, peer-to-peer "yapeo" transfers, mobile top-ups and QR-code point-of-sale payments — compatible with iOS VoiceOver and Android TalkBack. The company said further work was planned on audio-described content and image alt text across its app and social channels.
Peruvian outlet El Comercio reported that more than 100,000 people with visual disabilities were already using the app without assistance following the update, citing figures supplied by Yape.
Coverage of the update traces back to the same company-supplied figures and a single quote from Yape's "Experience Leader", repeated near-identically across the outlets found. One source (Yo También) is explicitly labelled sponsored/advertorial content, and no independent accessibility audit, user-testing report, or partnership with a blind-led organisation was located to verify the reported figures or confirm a co-design process.
