Contexte

Soil erosion and flood risk affect Haiti's Trois-Rivieres watershed, spanning the Artibonite, Nord and Nord-Ouest departments. In 2021 the Green Climate Fund (GCF) approved $22.4 million (project FP208) for an integrated flood-management programme in the watershed. Haiti's Ministry of Environment is the executing partner, with UNDP acting as the GCF-accredited entity.

Objectifs

The programme's results framework targets bringing 17,740 hectares under agroforestry systems and rehabilitating 7,700 hectares of degraded upland "water tower" forest, directly supporting 54,252 farmers and benefiting more than 733,000 people across the watershed. It aims for a 35% reduction in the number of households exposed to 20-year flood events, alongside an estimated 3,636,750 tonnes of CO2-equivalent mitigated over the programme's 25-year lifespan.

Activités

The programme pays for agroforestry and forest rehabilitation across the watershed, and is subject to GCF environmental and social safeguards review and annual performance reporting, with a 2024 Annual Performance Report already published.

Résultats

Because implementation only began in 2021, the flood-risk and carbon figures above are the funding proposal's approved targets tracked through GCF's monitoring framework rather than independently verified end-of-programme results.
