A surf-town charity in El Salvador built a local bitcoin economy from one 2019 donation, drawing global crypto tourists and inspiring the national Bitcoin Law — later found weakly adopted nationwide and partly reversed under IMF terms in 2025.

Context

In 2019 the El Zonte charity Hope House received a donation from an anonymous bitcoin holder on condition the funds stay in BTC. Local organisers used it to seed a circulating bitcoin economy for everyday purchases in the small surf town, branding the project Bitcoin Beach.

Results

By 2023 the project reported more than 3,000 residents using bitcoin day to day, over 500 participating families and around 120 local businesses accepting it. Bitcoin Beach's visibility helped drive El Salvador's 2021 law making bitcoin legal tender nationwide through the government's Chivo wallet.

Conclusions

The national rollout it inspired has not fared as well: a peer-reviewed study (Alvarez, Argente & Van Patten, Science 2023) found bitcoin usage low and declining nationally -- fewer than 60% of eligible residents ever downloaded Chivo, only 20% kept using it, and just 5% of sales were paid in bitcoin. In January 2025, to secure a US$1.4 billion IMF Extended Fund Facility, El Salvador amended its Bitcoin Law to make merchant acceptance voluntary.
