Description

Bremen began building 'mobil.punkte' in 2003: branded carsharing stations on public street space, planned and built by the city and operated by carsharing providers selected through a formal procedure and bound to quality and environmental standards. Set-up costs are reported at roughly €5,000–40,000 per station (Interreg Europe good-practice entry).
A 2025 evaluation by Institute Schreier, commissioned by the City of Bremen and financed by SHARE-North-Squared, reports that each shared car replaces 18.8 private cars (over 11,000 fewer privately parked cars), that more than two-thirds of carsharing households are car-free versus under a quarter of non-members, and that 93% of users are satisfied. As of June 2026 over 32,000 residents use carsharing, with over 660 vehicles (about 530 at fixed stations, 120 free-floating); the city aims to cap the distance between stations at 300 m.
Caveats: the replacement ratio comes from a user survey, not from counted car registrations; the article does not report response rates, and the city both commissioned and operates the programme. Earlier Bremen studies gave lower ratios (roughly 7–15), and station counts differ between sources (55 on-street mobil.punkte in the 2025 article versus '150+' in the Interreg Europe entry).
