Chile's Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente (SMA) launched its "Environmental Intelligence Strategy: Data Science in the Service of the Environment and the Community" in October 2021, combining continuous real-time sensor connections, automated compliance reporting and satellite image analysis (Sentinel-1 SAR, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8/9 multispectral imagery) to flag irregularities at protected wetlands, lakes and aquaculture centres before they escalate.
By its own announcement, SMA targeted roughly 1,000 regulated installations connected to real-time monitoring, with monitoring and enforcement results published on the public SNIFA registry (Sistema Nacional de Informacion de Fiscalizacion Ambiental). SMA has since shared the approach with Peru's environmental enforcement agency OEFA, and university partners (Pontificia Universidad Catolica, Universidad Adolfo Ibanez) have built satellite-based automated-monitoring pilots, such as one covering sclerophyll forest and shrubland, to extend SMA's coverage.
No independently audited figures on detection accuracy, violations caught, or fines resulting specifically from the AI/satellite components were found in public sources; SMA's own communications describe targets and capabilities rather than measured after-the-fact enforcement impact, so the practice should be read as an established but still-evolving compliance-monitoring infrastructure rather than a proven high-impact intervention.
