Context

Digital Self (Digitala jag) is a nationwide Swedish educational initiative from a public-private partnership between the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) and Google, formed in June 2017 (building on Google's 2015 Digitalakademin with Almi), offering free online and in-person digital and enterprise skills training to small and medium-sized businesses and jobseekers.

Objectives

The initiative aims to raise the overall level of digital skills in Sweden, help small and medium-sized companies compete as digitalisation increases international competition, facilitate job matching, and prevent digital exclusion.

Activities

The programme has four pillars: an online platform for everyday digital skills, a four-week full-time digital skills training course, a training hub in Stockholm, and internal digital training for Arbetsförmedlingen company advisors.

Results

Since the platform's November 2017 launch, over 27,000 Swedes have taken or started a course, with a 91% recommendation rate and 89%-97% positive ratings across sessions (the Privacy & Security topic rated highest). A pilot round of 'Digital Koordinator' reported 88% of jobseekers finding employment within two weeks of completing training.

Conclusions

The organisers state they planned to measure impact through attribution surveys tracking employment and company-revenue outcomes, but as of the source text these surveys had just begun going out with no results yet available; the initiative was also expanding to a semi-permanent presence across Sweden beyond Stockholm.
