Context

Delivered in Slovakia by the Gaudete Foundation together with two Slovak NGOs, EsFem and Equal Chances, the practice addresses gender-based violence and gender inequality within marginalised Roma communities.

Objectives

It aims to raise Roma women's and girls' awareness of gender equality and to build their sense of rights, dignity and voice.

Activities

Core activities are educational sessions, awareness campaigns and support activities for Roma women and girls, complemented by a creative strand: in the ‘Roma women you (don’t know)’ initiative, local art-school children illustrated portraits and life stories of accomplished Roma women (a composer, violinist, singer, dancer, artist, jeweller, activist, scientist, translator, teacher and doctor) for a wall calendar.

Results

The project reports having helped develop strong female leaders within the marginalised communities involved, capable of coordinating other women, according to the project manager; no independent measurement of this outcome is cited.
