Context

MAKE CODE is an initiative of the Youth Foundation (Fundação da Juventude), supported by Microsoft, aimed at improving the digital skills of young people, teachers and schools in the Northern Region of Portugal. It targets schools within Priority Intervention Educational Territories (TEIP), located in economically and socially disadvantaged territories marked by poverty, social exclusion, violence, indiscipline, abandonment and school failure.

Objectives

To prepare students aged 6 to 15 for a digital society by teaching programming, increasing and stimulating interest in acquiring digital skills, and supporting both students and teachers, even teachers without prior programming knowledge.

Activities

MAKE CODE uses Micro:bit (a microcontroller board) and Minecraft: Education Edition, part of Microsoft's MakeCode-based coding environment, as learning tools based on computer games. Each teacher receives in-person or online training support for implementing these technologies in the classroom, and schools receive free Micro:bit kits and Minecraft: Education Edition licences.

Results

The programme reached around 9,000 students and teachers, matching its stated target, over its 2018-2021 run.
