Context

In January 2024, Eswatini's Schools Online Foundation, a non-profit working with the Ministry of Education and Training, began piloting Nomfundo AI, described as the country's first classroom AI programme, at Evelyn Baring, Salesian and Somnjalose High Schools.

Activities

Nomfundo is a text/voice chatbot meant to deliver lesson content, mark student work, give notes and follow-up exercises, flag where a learner went wrong, offer career-oriented counselling, and support school dropouts preparing for exams, with a stated future goal of teaching in siSwati as well as English.

Results

The rollout was contested from the start: the Swaziland National Association of Teachers argued the education sector was not ready for the technology, noting many teachers still struggled with basic tools such as calculators, and said schools needed to bring teachers 'up to speed' first.

Conclusions
