Norrsken House Kigali

Norrsken House Kigali is a startup campus opened in Kigali, Rwanda in December 2021 by the Norrsken Foundation, a Swedish non-profit founded by Klarna co-founder Niklas Adalberth. Housed in a renovated Belgian school building in Kigali's finance district, it was inaugurated by President Paul Kagame as Norrsken's first major expansion beyond its original 2016 Stockholm House, and one of a planned network of up to 25 houses worldwide.

TechCrunch reported the hub opened with roughly 250 entrepreneurs in its first phase, targeting 750 more — 1,000 total — by the end of 2022; initial tenants included startups PesaChoice, SPENN, Fixa, BioMassters and ZoraBots alongside partner organisations Katapult VC, the Bestseller Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and the Novartis Foundation's East Africa health-tech hub. Later reporting describes an expanded roughly 12,000 m² campus hosting over 1,300 entrepreneurs, with capacity plans for up to 1,500. At the parent-organisation level, Norrsken's network of five funds has raised over €750 million backing 150+ startups, though this figure spans all Norrsken locations, not Kigali alone.

Tech outlet Sifted's reporting is notably candid about the risks of the expansion: Kigali, unlike Lagos, Nairobi, Cairo or Cape Town, had no established unicorns and received markedly less venture capital, and Norrsken's own CEO acknowledged at launch, 'we are completely new at this, we are learning on the go.' The foundation also applies a broader definition of impact in Rwanda than in Sweden, treating job creation alone as a qualifying outcome — a deliberate adaptation to context, but one that makes results harder to compare with Norrsken's stricter home-market criteria.

As a young hub (roughly four years old), Norrsken House Kigali shows real, independently-verified scale and high-profile institutional backing, but not yet an independently evaluated track record of startup outcomes.
