In spring 2023, the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MŠMT) commissioned an expert working group at the National Pedagogical Institute of the Czech Republic (NPI ČR) to respond to the rapid spread of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools among students and teachers. The group produced a set of national recommendations, published in September 2023, addressed separately to school principals, teachers, students and parents, advising schools not to ban generative AI outright but instead to establish clear classroom and school-level rules and keep communication with families open.
NPI ČR followed the recommendations with free online courses for teachers from that September, and supported schools through regional ICT methodologists and IT consultants. The recommendations were widely reported in Czech media, including public broadcaster Czech Radio's news site iROZHLAS, which quoted an AI expert warning that generative tools can confidently state incorrect information and advising schools on how to verify and responsibly integrate AI into teaching.
A subsequent large-scale survey of 2,175 Czech teachers by Palacký University Olomouc and Microsoft Czech Republic & Slovakia, reported by Brno Daily in 2025, found opinions on AI in schools still vary widely between teachers and school leaders, with ChatGPT the most-used tool (36% of teachers), most often for generating teaching texts, translations and test preparation — evidence that the 2023 recommendations addressed a real and continuing need rather than a one-off announcement.
