Description

The University of Oxford became the first UK university to give all staff and students free access to ChatGPT Edu (GPT-5), from the 2025/26 academic year, after a year-long pilot with about 750 staff coordinated by its AI Competency Centre.
The rollout is paired with governance and capability measures: a new AI Governance Group and Digital Governance Unit, refreshed mandatory information-security and data-protection training with an AI section, introductory training with OpenAI Academy webinars, over 100 AI Ambassadors, and guidance on assessments and student study. ChatGPT Edu keeps university data inside the institution's environment; Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini remain available.
Evidence is descriptive: the university reports the pilot as 'overwhelmingly positive' with case studies, but no independent learning-outcome evaluation has been published, and the deal is part of a five-year OpenAI partnership, which raises vendor-dependence questions.
