Qatar's $800m sovereign-funded science park now hosts 400+ companies from 39 countries co-located with six international universities, running corporate accelerators with TotalEnergies and Merck.
Inaugurated in March 2009 inside Qatar Foundation's Education City, Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) was designated the country's first free-trade zone and built with more than $800 million of Qatar Foundation investment to co-locate corporate R&D centres, startups and researchers alongside six branch campuses of international universities (Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Georgetown, Northwestern, Texas A&M and Virginia Commonwealth). Initial anchor tenants included ExxonMobil, Shell, GE, Microsoft, Rolls-Royce and Total, with a second construction phase completed in 2014–2016 to expand capacity.
As of 2026, QSTP reports hosting more than 400 companies, with active startups representing 39 countries, and runs corporate-sponsored accelerators intended to funnel research toward commercial application: the QSTP x TotalEnergies WaterTech Accelerator drew 226 applications from 79 countries, and the QSTP x Merck FemTech Accelerator drew 242 applications from 64 countries, 71% of them women-led startups. A parallel women's-entrepreneurship initiative, 'The 300', has built a 300-plus-member community and run structured training cohorts. QSTP employs roughly 1,000 staff across its entities and, in 2024, signed a workflow agreement with the Qatar Financial Centre to streamline company registration for QSTP-based firms.
