Startup Poland — Warsaw's Tech Ecosystem Advocacy, Annual Benchmarking and Founder Support

Startup Poland (Stowarzyszenie Startup Poland) was founded in Warsaw in 2013 as Poland's national association of technology startups. Modelled on similar industry associations in more mature ecosystems, it was created at a moment when Polish tech entrepreneurship was transitioning from a low-cost software outsourcing economy to one producing original products and intellectual property — a strategic shift that required a coordinated advocacy and evidence-production effort.

Startup Poland's core functions are: producing the annual Polish startup ecosystem report (the primary longitudinal data source for the ecosystem's growth); lobbying government on regulation, taxation, and immigration policy affecting founders; running acceleration and training programmes for early-stage founders; and participating in international fora to profile Warsaw and Poland as an investment destination. The association represents hundreds of startups and has become the default data provider for journalists, investors, and policymakers describing the Polish ecosystem.

The evidence for ecosystem growth is compelling. According to the 2024 edition and cross-referenced by The Recursive (independent tech media) and Startup Genome: Polish startups raised approximately EUR 2.3 billion in VC funding in 2024, up around 30% year-on-year. Warsaw attracted USD 161 million in early-stage (Seed and Series A) funding between mid-2022 and 2024 (Startup Genome). Notable 2024 rounds include ICEYE (€90M Series E) and ElevenLabs (€80M Series B). Twenty-eight percent of Polish startups operate in AI, IoT, or medtech.

Startup Poland operates in a complex funding environment: part of its work has been financed through EU structural funds, which creates both a window of opportunity and a dependency risk as EU cohesion funding cycles evolve. However, the association's independent membership model and fee-for-service revenues provide a degree of financial resilience. As an advocacy and evidence organisation rather than a direct capital provider, it occupies a distinct and important niche in an ecosystem that now ranks among the top five in Central and Eastern Europe.
