Taiwan Adaptive Learning Platform (TALP) — AI-assisted teaching and adaptive K-12 learning

Taiwan · Taipei · See the Taiwan profile

Taiwan's MoE integrates AI into its free national Adaptive Learning Platform (TALP) for K-12. A quasi-experiment (n=4,442 sixth-graders) showed significant maths gains; ~1,700 teachers adopted AI-integrated lesson plans under Digital Teaching Guide 3.0.

Context

The Taiwan Adaptive Learning Platform (TALP) is a free national K-12 service launched by Taiwan's Ministry of Education in 2017, using AI to diagnose individual learning levels and generate personalised learning paths, mainly in mathematics. In 2023-2024 the MoE added generative-AI features (a virtual learning companion, cross-grade diagnostics, and AI-assisted content generation), codified in Digital Teaching Guide 3.0.

Results

A peer-reviewed quasi-experimental study (Liu et al., Educational Psychology, 2025) of 4,442 sixth-grade students found TALP users had significantly higher mathematics achievement and self-regulated learning than a comparison group, with self-regulated learning partially mediating the effect on maths performance. Approximately 1,700 teachers nationwide contributed AI-integrated lesson plans under the AI-Integrated Teaching Plan Selection, of which 20 were published as exemplars.

Conclusions

The study's authors note the evidence covers only sixth-grade mathematics, the AI adaptive model has not been independently audited, and no published equity analysis by socioeconomic status or disability is available.
