Context

This BCG and Technical University of Munich study empirically examines the relationship between management-team diversity and innovation performance among companies in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. It defines diversity broadly, including gender, nationality, industry and company background, and measures innovation through the revenue companies generate from innovative products and services.

Results

Innovation performance increased significantly only when management included more than 20% women; a high share of female employees overall had no effect on innovation if few women held management positions. The analysis, based on 171 companies, found a clear link between management diversity and innovation-driven revenue.

Conclusions

The underlying data cover only companies in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, though the researchers believe the findings apply more broadly.
