Context

Todai TLO, Ltd. was founded 3 August 1998 as the University of Tokyo's dedicated technology-licensing organisation, one of the earliest such offices in Japan. Since the university's incorporation in 2004, it has worked alongside CASTI, the university's in-house IP management unit.

Results

Over 25 years, more than 2,000 companies have signed contracts with Todai TLO. University-wide, as of March 2024 the University of Tokyo held 2,459 domestic patents (9,547 applications filed) and 2,510 international patents (9,640 applications filed), with 5,725 active licensed patents, 4,129 generating income. Total IP-related income reached ~¥9.11 billion in fiscal 2023, within overall research income of ¥111.6 billion including ¥18.7 billion from private-sector collaborations.
