UniQuest, UQ's commercialisation company since 1984, has produced 360+ US patents and 130+ start-ups (Gardasil, Spinifex, Inflazome); in July 2025 Sanofi agreed to acquire its spin-out Vicebio for up to US$1.6bn — Australia's largest-ever university IP deal.
UniQuest is the University of Queensland's wholly owned commercialisation company, established in 1984 to patent, license and spin out research from UQ; a $5 million investment in 1996 helped it grow into one of Australia's largest university technology-transfer operations.
UniQuest manages UQ's intellectual-property portfolio, files and prosecutes patents, negotiates licences with industry, and creates and holds equity in spin-out companies built on university research spanning biotech, agtech and engineering.
Over four decades, UniQuest has been granted more than 360 US patents and formed more than 130 start-up companies from UQ intellectual property, including licensing the HPV vaccine Gardasil to CSL Limited in 1994 and helping spin out Vicebio in 2018 around UQ's Molecular Clamp vaccine-stabilisation technology.
UniQuest's spin-out companies have collectively raised more than AUD$1 billion and generated more than AUD$86 billion in cumulative product sales; in July 2025 Sanofi agreed to acquire Vicebio for up to US$1.6 billion (US$1.15 billion upfront plus up to US$450 million in milestones), independently confirmed as the largest-ever intellectual-property deal from an Australian university.
The Vicebio deal is independently verified by Sanofi's own press release and international wire services, giving it unusually solid third-party confirmation, but the broader historic cumulative sales and fundraising totals remain UniQuest's own self-reported figures.
