Zhongguancun Science Park (Z-Park) — China's National Innovation Hub

Zhongguancun Science Park (ZGC), established in May 1988 as Beijing's High-Tech Industrial Development Experimental Zone and formally named in 1999, is China's premier innovation district. Administered by the Zhongguancun Science Park Administrative Committee under the Beijing Municipal Government, it now spans 'One Zone, Sixteen Parks' across Beijing, with a further expansion to Xiong'an New Area.

By 2024, ZGC hosted approximately 28,300 high-tech enterprises and 93 unicorn companies (down from 114 in 2023 due to listing reclassifications), with 532 listed companies generating total revenues of approximately 7.6 trillion yuan (January–November 2024) and 2.7 million employees. The park ranked first among all national high-tech zones in China's 2024 Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) comprehensive evaluation.

ZGC's innovation infrastructure includes over 200 business incubators (66 national-level) and 147 registered makerspaces — the largest concentration in China. The park registered 8,776 PCT international patent applications in 2024 and launched approximately 90 new businesses daily. R&D investment in the park totalled 478.5 billion yuan in 2024.

University anchors — including Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences — underpin knowledge transfer. The park has recruited over 20,000 high-calibre talents in biomedicine, AI, and integrated circuits in 2024 alone, and hosts over 2,500 startups founded by overseas returnees. China Daily, Nature Index, and the International Association of Science Parks (IASP) all cite ZGC as a leading global science city. Caution: governance transparency and market access for foreign firms remain notable limitations.
