Ais — Indonesia's 24/7 Government AI Unit for Flagging Hoax Content

Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo, reorganised in 2025 as Komdigi) formed its "Ais" content-monitoring team in January 2018 under the Directorate General of Informatics Applications (Ditjen Aptika), tasking around 100 staff with using automated crawling tools — described by the ministry and Indonesian media as an AI-based system — to scan Indonesian cyberspace around the clock for hoaxes, fraud, and other prohibited content.
Ministry disclosures reported by the state news wire Antara and independently confirmed by the outlet ItWorks.id show the team identified 11,642 hoax items between August 2018 and May 2023, rising to 11,759 by the end of June 2023 (117 new items that month, down from 141 in May). Health misinformation was the largest category (around 2,290 items), followed by government-impersonation hoaxes, fraud, and political hoaxes; separate reporting put 2024's total at roughly 1,900 items, with an October 2024 peak of 215. Citizens can submit reports via a dedicated email address, Twitter account, and WhatsApp line that feed into the same review process.
The reported figures measure content the ministry itself identified and do not include independent verification of classification accuracy, appeal outcomes, or whether flagged content was actually removed; the same "Ais" system also screens for pornography and gambling content, and rights groups have raised broader concerns in Indonesia about the risk of over-broad takedown powers, which this record does not adjudicate.
