41 co-researchers with cognitive disabilities, working with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, redesigned a prototype of Sweden's national 1177 eHealth service; published in the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, December 2025.
Begripsam is a Stockholm-based association and company whose members have lived experience of cognitive disabilities arising from diagnoses such as intellectual disability, acquired brain injury or long-term illness. It works with researchers and public bodies to test and redesign digital services for cognitive accessibility.
Between the group and Funktionsrätt Skåne, 41 people with cognitive impairments (26 women, 15 men, aged 20–75) took part as co-researchers, alongside Stefan Johansson of KTH Royal Institute of Technology's Media Technology and Interaction Design group, in a three-step 'Participatory Research through Design' process to evaluate and redesign a prototype based on 1177, Sweden's national public eHealth service.
The collaboration produced a high-fidelity redesigned prototype and was published as peer-reviewed research in the International Journal of Human–Computer Interaction in December 2025. The redesign has been evaluated with co-researchers but has not yet been adopted into the live 1177 service, so its population-level impact is not yet demonstrated.
