Context

Through the Korea-World Bank Group Partnership Facility, the World Bank and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic built the country's first digital-skills assessment framework and its first pedagogy-focused training course for informatics teachers, alongside an emerging 'AI-readiness' diagnostic for the education system.

Activities

Between 2020 and 2025 the programme delivered digital-skills training to roughly 36,000 teachers (80% women), equipped 1,200 schools with an IT platform for technology-enabled teaching, ran a 32-week mentoring programme (2023-2025), and trained 900 deputy principals in digital leadership.

Results

The World Bank reports the AI-readiness diagnostic developed for Kyrgyzstan has since been replicated in Romania and Turkiye.

Conclusions

Evidence for the AI-specific component is still limited: published results describe infrastructure and general digital-skills reach rather than measured AI-related learning outcomes, and the 'AI-readiness' framing appears mainly in the programme's most recent (2026) reporting rather than from the outset.

Implementation

Indicative cost
High (€500k–€5M) — Funded via the Korea-World Bank Group Partnership Facility; total programme cost not disclosed in sources reviewed.
