Context

In April 2022, Japan's MEXT made 'Information I' compulsory for all high school students, covering problem-solving, communication/information design, computers and programming, and networks/data utilisation including foundational AI concepts, for roughly 3 million students per year across ~4,800 schools.

Results

In January 2025 Information I appeared for the first time in the national Common Test for University Admissions, carrying 100 of 1,000 points, with all national universities required to include it in admissions screening. A 2022 MEXT survey found 58% of teachers felt underprepared to teach AI-related content, prompting a target of training 50,000 educators.
