Context

Barbados' National Training Institute (NTI), established under the BERT economic-recovery plan, partnered with Coursera to give Barbadians free access to online courses, expanding in phases including a 2026 tie-up with BIMAP.

Results

As of mid-2026, more than 12,000 individuals had completed NTI digital courses, with the curriculum grown from six tracks at launch to sixteen. A 2026 National Digital Assessment found 41% of employees still lack essential digital skills and 39% of managers recognise a need for upskilling but lack structured pathways.

Conclusions

In response, Barbados launched a two-track National Digital Skills Empowerment Campaign in July 2026 -- a Digital Workforce Accelerator for businesses and a public track via community centres, schools and private providers. The completion figure and assessment findings are self-reported; no independent audit or employment-outcome tracking has been published.
