Since 2003, UCD's NovaUCD hub has supported 550+ start-ups and ventures whose founders raised over €1.3bn in equity funding over 20 years; named one of Europe's leading university start-up hubs by the FT/Statista in 2024 and 2025.
NovaUCD is University College Dublin's dedicated innovation, technology-transfer and enterprise-support unit, based on the university's Belfield campus since it opened in October 2003. It runs UCD's intellectual-property licensing process, hosts incubation space for early-stage ventures, and organises structured supports such as the Campus Company Development Programme and an annual Investor Day connecting UCD spin-outs with venture capital and angel investors.
Since 2003, NovaUCD has supported more than 550 companies and early-stage ventures, whose founders have collectively raised over €1.3 billion in equity funding over the past 20 years, according to Enterprise Ireland reporting on a 2023 site visit. At that time NovaUCD was hosting 70+ current start-ups and established companies, which together projected creating over 1,100 jobs and raising a further €290 million within two years — self-reported founder plans rather than audited outcomes. Earlier UCD data from NovaUCD's first five years (2003-2008) recorded 170 invention disclosures, 122 patent applications and 24 licence agreements.
NovaUCD was named one of Europe's leading university start-up hubs by the Financial Times and Statista in both 2024 and 2025 — the only Irish university-based hub on the list both years — indicating sustained external recognition rather than a one-off award. The main evidence gap is that headline job-creation and fundraising targets are founder-reported forecasts, not verified outcomes, and no equity or inclusion data for founders is published.
