Context

Following a November 2025 partnership, the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), the University of the West Indies' Cave Hill campus, and the Eastern Caribbean Joint Board of Teacher Education began co-developing a regional framework for responsible AI use in teacher education across five OECS states (Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines).

Objectives

The initiative aims to produce a regional AI curriculum framework, an AI policy and a code of conduct specifically for teacher educators — a group its chair, Dr Laurette Bristol, describes as one of the most marginalised in AI-in-education efforts — as groundwork for a planned teacher-training course.

Activities

Ten regional representatives from teacher-education institutions and ministries took part in a one-day online preparatory session (January 2026) and a five-day regional workshop (February 2026) to draft the documents, followed by a wider validation workshop in April 2026 involving at least 40 regional participants.

Conclusions

As of the source date, the initiative has produced draft governance documents only; no classroom AI training or learning-outcome data exists yet, with a capacity-building course for ethical AI use planned as the next phase.
