Description

MIA Seconde (Module d'Intelligence Artificielle) is a digital remediation service for pupils entering Seconde (Year 10) in France. It uses adaptive algorithms to propose French and maths exercises tailored to each pupil's results on the start-of-year positioning tests, and is accessible through the school digital workspace (ENT) and on smartphones.

According to reporting by Next based on procurement documents, the contract (signed August 2022) is worth EUR 2.8 million over 36 months, split between EvidenceB (EUR 2.04 million, pedagogical modules) and Docaposte (EUR 751,000, hosting and support). The experiment covered eight académies, 150 volunteer lycées and over 300 Seconde classes, with general rollout planned for the 2024 school year; the minister announced in January 2024 that all Seconde pupils and teachers could use it from September 2024.

Evidence is the weak point. The ministry's digital-education director stated in January 2024 that it was still too early to evaluate the tools' added value scientifically, and the ministry said it would not publish source code or explain the algorithms, which belong to its partner companies, even though the tender asked for transparency and interpretability. The tender requires impact studies, but we found no published results.

Value for other systems: a documented example of a nationally procured adaptive-learning service, with a clear cost, scale and procurement trail, but also a cautionary case on deploying at scale before publishing efficacy evidence or algorithmic documentation.
